The "Hands-On Internet for Business" Workshop
What Are the Internet Protocols?
The most basic protocol for Internet is TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol). TCP/IP defines the how data transmissions are partitioned into packets and tagged with the transmission identifier, packet order and destination address. Using the tagging information, the community of nodes on Internet routes these data packets to the destination node. The destination node uses the tagging information to reassemble the data packets in the correct packet order.
Layered on top of the TCP/IP protocol are higher level protocols for requesting software applications on remote nodes to perform the desired function. Examples of these protocols include the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP), Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension (MIME), Post Office Protocol (POP), the File Transfer Protocol (FTP), Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), etc.
